Dental Care During Pregnancy Carson, CA

Pregnancy is a wonderful time in a woman’s life. Congratulations on your baby! Pregnancy affects many things, however, and that includes your oral health. Did you know you’re more prone to developing cavities and gum disease during pregnancy? That’s one of the reasons it’s so important to continue visiting our Carson office regularly during your pregnancy.

Our staff here at Care Dental Center has a lot of experience providing dental care during pregnancy. You and your baby will be in good hands at our office.

Here are some of the most common questions we get asked about dental care during pregnancy and the answers to each.

Is Seeing the Dentist During Pregnancy Safe?

Yes, it’s absolutely safe. There is no reason you shouldn’t get your regular checkups during pregnancy. Getting your routine checkups will ensure that you have the best oral health possible and prevent the development of conditions such as periodontal (gum) disease and cavities.

Why Are Routine Dental Checkups During Pregnancy Important?

As previously mentioned, you are more prone to developing both cavities and gingivitis during pregnancy. This makes getting your normal checkups here in our Carson office even more important, both to prevent problems from occurring and to treat them while they are easy to treat if they already exist.

How Should I Take Care of My Oral Health During Pregnancy?

You don’t need to do anything extra or different to protect your oral health while you’re pregnant. Be sure to continue brushing twice a day and flossing at least once per day, continue using mouthwash if you do so, and get your routine checkups at the Carson office, and you should be good to go.

Why Are Cavities and Gum Disease More Likely to Occur During Pregnancy?

There are several reasons that together raise your risk for these conditions while you’re pregnant. First is the tendency to snack on more sugary foods. This increases the sugar available to the bacteria that cause both tooth decay and gingivitis.

Secondly, the hormone fluctuations that accompany pregnancy can make you more prone to these issues. This is especially true for gingivitis. Finally, the nausea, vomiting, and indigestion that occur during pregnancy can expose your teeth to more stomach acid than normal, which affects the enamel and can make them prone to decay.

What if I Need Dental Treatment During Pregnancy?

If you need dental treatments beyond routine cleanings while you’re pregnant, your dentist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that is safe for you and your baby. We will not do anything to put your baby at risk.

Are There Any Other Oral Health Problems I’m More Likely to Develop During Pregnancy?

Aside from the increased risk of cavities and gum disease, you’re also at risk of developing a condition called pyogenic granuloma. This is a condition that causes benign growths on your gum tissue that may bleed. This condition is caused by the hormone fluctuations that accompany pregnancy.

When Should My Baby First See the Dentist?

Your child should see the dentist within six months of the first tooth coming in or by 12 months of age, whichever is sooner.

How Much Does Dental Care During Pregnancy Cost?

Dental care during pregnancy is no more expensive than it is before or after pregnancy. The amount your insurance will cover for any procedure, or a routine cleaning doesn’t change based on pregnancy status. Neither do our fees. If you have questions about your coverage, please contact our office and we’ll be happy to answer them.
