Care Dental Center in Carson is proud to be a modern dental practice offering all the latest technologies and advancements in dental care. One of the best advancements of the past several years is the introduction of digital x-rays.

We’re proud to be one of the few practices in the area that offers this modern, low-radiation technique to our patients. We get a lot of questions about digital x-rays, so we compiled this list of the most common and their answers. If you have questions that aren’t on this list, feel free to give us a call and our staff will be happy to help you.

Why Do I Need Digital X-Rays?

Just like traditional x-rays, digital x-rays are used to identify and diagnose tooth decay and other dental problems that aren’t visible to the naked eye. Early diagnosis is the best way to treat emerging problems.

How Often Do I Need Digital X-Rays?

If you aren’t at increased risk for developing cavities, the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends new x-rays every 24-36 months. If you are at increased risk, the ADA recommends x-rays be taken every 6-18 months.

If you develop a problem or experience an injury to your teeth or jaw between standard x-ray visits, your provider might order additional x-rays of the problem area for diagnostic purposes.

How Do Digital X-Rays Differ from Traditional X-Rays?

Digital x-rays, or dental radiographs, are x-rays taken using digital sensors instead of traditional photographic film. The result is high-quality pictures of the mouth, teeth, and gums with much less radiation exposure than traditional x-rays.

What Are the Benefits of Getting Digital X-Rays?

One of the main benefits of digital x-rays is the lower amount of radiation involved in the procedure. Digital x-ray machines use only 10-20% of the amount of radiation used in traditional x-ray machines. In addition, the pictures produced are much sharper than photographic x-rays and can be enhanced to aid in diagnosis.

Computer technology allows digital x-rays to be enlarged, zoomed-in, colorized, and otherwise enhanced to allow your doctor to make better diagnoses. None of these enhancements are possible with traditional x-rays.

The enhanced resolution of digital x-rays allows earlier detection of problems, meaning the patients at our Carson office can get earlier treatment, saving time and pain down the road. Digital x-rays are also more portable than traditional x-rays; they can be stored and transported electronically rather than by physical copies.

Digital x-rays are also more environmentally friendly than traditional x-rays. They don’t produce the hazardous waste required for chemically processing photographic x-rays.

Are Digital X-Rays Safe?

Digital x-rays are completely safe! They are much safer than traditional x-rays, in fact, because of the lower amounts of radiation used to produce them.

How Long Do Digital X-Rays Take?

Digital x-rays are as quick as traditional x-rays. They can be taken either inside the mouth or outside the mouth. Either way, once you are in position, taking the x-rays themselves only takes a few seconds.

How Much Do Digital X-Rays Cost?

The cost of digital x-rays varies based on whether you have dental insurance and how much of the procedure your insurance covers. As they’re considered preventative care, many insurance policies offer generous coverage for digital x-rays, leaving you with little out-of-pocket costs.
